Ajay Ghale
A son seeking to scatter his mother's ashes finds himself caught in a violent struggle for Kyrat's soul.
Ajay Ghale is a young Kyrati-American who serves as the protagonist of Far Cry 4. In 2014, he returns to the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat with a singular goal: to fulfill his deceased mother Ishwari's final wish by spreading her ashes at a sacred site named Lakshmana. However, his journey is immediately interrupted when the Golden Path attacks the bus he is traveling on. He is greeted by Pagan Min, the tyrannical king of Kyrat, who acts warmly before leaving him alone in a room, from which Ajay escapes on his own. This event thrusts Ajay into a civil war between the Royal Army and the Golden Path rebel movement.

Lore & Background
The story of Ajay Ghale is deeply rooted in the history of Kyrat, a nation fractured by Pagan Min's twenty-year rule. Ajay's father was Mohan Ghale, who established the Golden Path rebellion to fight against Min's tyranny. After Ishwari and Ajay fled Kyrat two decades prior, the rebellion stagnated until Ajay's return made him a vital symbol for the Golden Path to rally around. The narrative centers on three regional governors serving Pagan: Paul "De Pleur" Harmon, who runs opium production; Noore Najjar, who manages poaching and prostitution rings; and Yuma Lau, Min's second-in-command and loyal lieutenant obsessed with the Kyrati relic and the prophecy of the Golden Path. Ajay discovers that his mother was once part of Min's inner circle, revealing a complex personal connection between the protagonist and the antagonist.
In Their Own Story
Ajay's mission begins when he is attacked by the Royal Army on his way to Lakshmana. After Pagan Min brutally kills a soldier for shooting the bus, Ajay flees with the aid of Sabal, a Golden Path commander. Unable to leave as the airport and borders are sealed, Ajay joins the rebellion. His objective shifts from scattering ashes to liberating territory held by Pagan. He infiltrates outposts controlled by the Royal Army, including four larger fortresses with stronger defenses. As he progresses, parts of his journey take him to Shangri-La, a mystical dreamland where he battles demons as the Kyrati warrior Kalinag, accompanied by an injured tiger companion. The story follows his fight against the three governors while navigating the dangerous wildlife and enemy soldiers scattered across North and South Kyrat.
