Jack Carver
A former special forces soldier stranded on an archipelago of genetic nightmares who must rescue a missing journalist and survive his own infection.
Jack Carver is a retired U.S. Army Special Forces operative who becomes the sole survivor and protagonist of the original 2004 first-person shooter, Far Cry. After accepting a job to transport journalist Valerie Constantine to an uncharted island in Micronesia, his boat is destroyed by mercenaries, stranding him on a mysterious tropical archipelago. Rather than waiting for rescue, Jack sets out to find Val, uncovering horrific genetic experiments conducted by the mad scientist Dr. Krieger and his company, Krieger Corp. His journey transforms from a simple search-and-rescue mission into a desperate fight against genetically altered beasts known as Trigens, rogue mercenaries, and eventually, the mutagen itself.

Lore & Background
The story begins when Jack Carver, having left a bitter past to run a boat-charter business in the South Pacific, is hired by Valerie Constantine. She claims to be a journalist but is actually an undercover CIA agent investigating Krieger Corp's operations. After Val disappears following the destruction of their boat, Jack teams up with a mysterious man named Doyle. Together they battle through the islands, discovering that the mercenaries are losing control of Trigens—genetically modified creatures that have moved beyond primate mutations to include humans. When Jack finally locates Val, she is being airlifted away; a struggle on the helicopter results in both falling into the water as it explodes. Val reveals her true identity, and they discover Krieger plans to detonate a tactical nuke to cover his tracks. The Department of Defense supposedly analyzes the situation, leading Jack and Val to steal the weapon. Before entering the factory, Doyle advises them to take a mutagen-resistant serum. However, after the nuke detonates and Krieger captures them, it is revealed that the "antidote" was actually the mutagen itself. With his dying breath, Krieger admits there is no cure. Doyle betrays Jack, revealing he intends to sell the formula on the black market before fleeing. Jack kills Doyle just as the volcano erupts, escaping with Val, who are both miraculously cured.
In Their Own Story
Jack Carver's adventure spans a South Pacific archipelago featuring beaches, dense rain forests, towering canyons, mines, swamps, and volcanic forests. The environment includes Japanese World War II-era fortifications, ultra-modern research labs, and underground temples. Early in the game, Jack uses special binoculars to mark enemies and listen to their conversations from afar; later, he utilizes thermo binoculars to detect heat signatures hidden by foliage or darkness. Sound is critical, as enemy footsteps and chatter reveal their locations. The gameplay allows for multiple approaches to objectives outdoors, but indoor sections are more linear. Jack faces mercenaries who call for reinforcements with flareguns when spotted. A major turning point occurs when the human Trigens escape and revolt against the mercenaries after Jack frees them. After killing mercenary commander Crowe, Jack learns of the nuke. In the climax, Jack fights through a Trigen-infested area to rescue Val from Krieger's main base. At a weapons cache, Jack notices his arm turning green due to high mutagen concentration. He tracks down an injected Krieger, defeats him, and confronts Doyle, who reveals the truth about the serum before being killed by Jack.
Reader's Guide
Players control Jack Carver in a first-person perspective within an open-ended environment where enemies react dynamically to tactics. The minimap allows Jack to spot and mark enemies using binoculars. Combat involves a variety of weapons, including automatic firearms and grenades, alongside environmental cover like tropical rain forests. While outdoor maps offer freedom to flank or circumvent enemies, indoor levels enforce a more traditional structure. Jack must manage resources and use sound cues to survive against coordinated mercenary squads that outmaneuver and suppress the player. The narrative is driven by specific plot points: surviving the boat explosion, rescuing Val from a helicopter crash, stealing a nuclear weapon, discovering the mutagen deception, killing Crowe and Doyle, and escaping the erupting volcano. The game was praised for its visuals and level of freedom despite its linear mission structure.
