Jason Brody

From stranded tourist to Rakyat warrior on the fictional Rook Islands.

Jason Brody is the central protagonist of Far Cry 3, a first-person shooter released in November 2012. Initially a vacationer in Bangkok, Thailand, he and his friends embark on a skydiving trip that goes horribly wrong when their plane crashes on the pirate-occupied Rook Islands. Captured by pirate lord Vaas Montenegro, Jason must escape and save his companions from slavery. Lore & Background

Jason Brody's story begins when he escapes captivity after his brother Grant is killed by one of Vaas's subordinates during an escape attempt. Rescued by Dennis, an adopted member of the Rakyat tribe, Jason receives the Tatau tattoos and is recognized as a potential warrior. He helps the Rakyat retake their island from pirates while searching for his friends: Grant (his brother, who dies), Liza, Keith, Oliver, and Daisy. Alongside Dr. Earnhardt and CIA agent Willis Huntley, Jason discovers that Vaas is Citra's brother, who betrayed the Rakyat to become a pirate leader; the slave trader Hoyt Volker operates separately. As Jason matures into a skilled killer revered by the Rakyat, he grows distant from his friends, eventually enjoying the violence itself.

In Their Own Story

Jason infiltrates enemy outposts and climbs radio towers to unlock new areas and weapons. He completes Trials of the Rakyat missions, hunts wildlife for crafting materials, and rescues his girlfriend Liza and friend Keith. After finding Daisy at Dr. Earnhardt's house, he is initiated into the Rakyat by priestess Citra following a ritual involving the Silver Dragon Knife. In a hallucinogenic state induced by Citra, Jason fights duplicates of Vaas before stabbing the real Vaas with the Dragon Knife. He then travels to Hoyt's island with Huntley and operative Sam Becker, discovering his younger brother Riley is alive but captive. To maintain a ruse, Jason beats Riley on camera while Hoyt watches; later, he kills Hoyt in a knife fight after Sam Becker is murdered. Escaping with Riley, they find Dr. Earnhardt dying as his house burns.

Reader's Guide

Players control Jason Brody to approach objectives through combat or stealth, using silenced weapons and knives to avoid alarms. He can scout outposts with a camera, toss rocks to distract enemies, and utilize vehicles like dune buggies, jet skis, and hang gliders. Skills are unlocked via experience points in three trees: Spider (stealth/hunting), Shark (assault/health), and Heron (long-range/mobility). Jason can hunt animals for materials to craft holsters and ammo pouches, gather plants for syringes that heal or provide advantages, and liberate outposts to turn them into rebel bases with fast travel points. The game includes side missions like supply runs, hunting quests, assassination tasks, minigames (poker, knife throwing), and collectibles such as relics and memory cards.
