Lore & Background

Jack Carver's story unfolds on a South Pacific archipelago featuring beaches, dense rain forests, towering canyons, and volcanic forests. After his boat was destroyed by mercenaries, he received help from a man named Doyle to traverse the islands while battling mysterious forces searching for Valerie Constantine. Jack discovered the island was part of an experiment involving genetic modification funded by Krieger Corp and led by Dr. Krieger. He encountered Trigens, genetically altered beasts that had escaped containment, as well as human mutations resulting from the experiments. The terrain included simple beach huts, army camps, elaborate complexes, underground temples, and ultra-modern research labs built using remnants of Japanese World War II-era fortifications.

In Their Own Story

Jack's search for Val led him through a war zone where mercenaries used flare guns to signal reinforcements and Trigens roamed free. After catching up with Val, who was being taken by helicopter, they both fell from the exploding aircraft after she kicked Jack in the face during a struggle. Upon reaching shore, Val revealed she was an undercover CIA agent. As human Trigens freed by Jack began a revolt against mercenaries, Jack rescued Val and killed mercenary commander Crowe. Information found on Crowe indicated Dr. Krieger possessed a tactical nuke intended to cover his tracks. Despite Jack's protests, he and Val stole the weapon. Inside the factory, they took a serum Doyle claimed was an antidote before arming the nuke. The device detonated behind them as they exited, leaving them unconscious before Krieger captured them. Kicked off a helicopter by Krieger, Jack fought through Trigen-infested areas and noticed his arm turning green due to high mutagen concentration. Directed to find Krieger for a cure, he defeated the scientist who had injected himself with the mutagen. On his dying breath, Krieger revealed there was no cure. Doyle then admitted the "antidote" was actually more mutagen and planned to sell the formula before fleeing. Jack caught up with and killed Doyle, escaping just before Krieger's main offices in a volcano erupted. Both he and Val were cured from the mutagen and managed to sail off on a boat.

Reader's Guide

Players experience Jack's journey through an open-ended environment where they can freely explore, though mission structures often encourage linear progression. The gameplay relies heavily on sound design, as enemy locations are frequently identified by footsteps or conversations. Players utilize special binoculars to spot and mark enemies on the minimap, listen to distant conversations, and later use thermo binoculars to locate heat signatures concealed by foliage or darkness. The environment offers multiple routes for objectives outdoors, allowing players to circumvent enemies or attack from different angles, while indoor sections tend toward traditional linear design. Jack must manage resources including automatic weapons and grenades while navigating dynamic enemy tactics that include flanking and suppressive fire.
