Ajay Ghale
A Kyrati-American returns home to scatter ashes, only to be caught in a civil war between a tyrant king and a fractured rebellion.
Ajay Ghale is the protagonist of Far Cry 4, a Kyrati-American young man who returns to the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat in 2014. His initial mission is personal and solemn: to fulfill his deceased mother Ishwari's final wish by spreading her ashes at the shrine of Lakshmana. However, this pilgrimage is violently interrupted when the bus he travels on is attacked by the Royal Army. Instead of a peaceful return, Ajay finds himself caught in a brutal civil war between Pagan Min's tyrannical regime and the Golden Path rebel movement. Lore & Background
Ajay Ghale is a Kyrati-American whose life changed forever after the death of his mother, Ishwari. He travels from America to Kyrat, but upon arrival, he is immediately captured by Pagan Min following an attack on his bus. Min, the eccentric and violent king controlling the Royal Army, acts warmly toward Ajay before kidnapping him for a dinner party at Lieutenant Paul De Pleur's mansion. After escaping with the help of Sabal, a Golden Path commander, Ajay learns that the rebellion he joins is fighting for its very existence after stagnating for over twenty years. His father, Mohan Ghale, founded the movement, making Ajay a symbolic leader despite his American upbringing. The conflict forces Ajay to target three regional governors: Paul Harmon, who runs torture chambers; Noore Najjar, a victim of Min's cruelty; and Yuma Lau, obsessed with Shangri-La. As he liberates outposts and bell towers, the map opens up, revealing a world divided into North and South Kyrat. Ajay must navigate the Golden Path's internal divide between Sabal and Amita while battling wildlife and soldiers. His journey also takes him to the mystical dreamland of Shangri-La, where he battles demons as the warrior Kalinag alongside an injured tiger companion.
In Their Own Story
The story begins when Ajay Ghale attempts to return his mother's ashes to Lakshmana in Kyrat. His bus is attacked by the Royal Army, and he is greeted not by friends but by Pagan Min himself. After a chaotic dinner party where his guide is taken for interrogation, Ajay flees with Sabal of the Golden Path. He discovers that Kyrat's airport is sealed and borders blocked, trapping him in the civil war. As the son of Mohan Ghale, he becomes a rallying point for the rebels fighting to break Pagan Min's stranglehold on power. Ajay liberates territories from governors like Paul Harmon and Noore Najjar, gaining experience and unlocking new areas by freeing bell towers. He engages in side missions such as hostage rescues and bomb disposal, while also hunting animals to craft gear. The narrative allows for a branching storyline where Ajay can perform kind actions to accumulate karma, earning discounts and support from the Golden Path. Throughout the campaign, he utilizes stealth or open assault, rides elephants, and flies autogyros called Buzzers. His path is marked by random hostile encounters, such as eagle attacks or car accidents, adding danger to his exploration of forests, rivers, and mountains.
Reader's Guide
Ajay Ghale serves as the player's avatar in a first-person action-adventure set in Kyrat. Players control Ajay using a wide array of weapons, from pistols and bows to rocket launchers and flamethrowers. He can take cover, perform melee takedowns, kick objects, and hide enemy corpses. The game emphasizes open-world exploration where players can use vehicles like buggies, trucks, speedboats, and the Buzzer autogyro for tactical advantage. Auto-drive functionality allows Ajay to travel while engaging enemies. Progression relies on earning experience points from missions and combat, which unlock upgrades in two distinct skill trees: The Tiger for offensive boosts and The Elephant for defensive skills. Players can accumulate karma by aiding rebels against wildlife or enemies, unlocking support calls and trading post discounts. The world is divided into North and South Kyrat; players start in the south and must liberate bell towers to access the north.
